More people need to listen to Sia pre-2010! You're missing out on some of the best music ever made. As you'll come to learn Sia is my favourite artist and her first few albums are something I hold close to my heart. Sia always just makes your day that little bit better, especially this album.
Putting your faith in something as simple as little black sandals could save your life. This track is about being saved from depression by being taken on a journey by your feet and their little black sandals. When the "golden giant" - depression - has you in his grip it's difficult to leave. "He says he'll let go, if only I'd ask it of him", While you're in the depths of depression it's hard to see you're there. You need to put your faith into something else. This song, along with much of this album, is just super soothing, you can't not feel better after listening to it.
Sometimes you need someone to pick you up and carry you back to shore. "You'll tire before we see land" the journey back to safety can be long and tiresome but with a person who'll never put you down, it's possible to complete. Once a person has truly helped you, you need to keep them in your heart forever, "Honey, I will stitch you". This is a track that just needs to be sung at the top of your lungs. If you need a new driving song, this is the one.
This song is obviously about a failing relationship but I like to think about it differently. We all have that part of us we'd rather leave behind. Often we find ourselves supporting that "person" in us way more then we should. The first verse about having to look after yourself and only just being able to survive. So sometimes you just need to walk away. "No, I just don't wanna, so I'm walking away" is the best attitude to have. The second half Sia sings about cutting lose, it's no longer your problem, you've left it behind. It's only at the end of the song does she finally come out and say it "I'm the girl you lost to cocaine".
Advising a friend on heartbreak is a hard thing to do. Sometimes the best way is just to relay your own experiences and that's exactly what this song does. You're not going to die from over indigence of chocolate it's only temporary and Sia knows this, she's lived it. Again death by crying doesn't exist. You're gonna grow from this experience, you'll come back stronger than before. But death by anger is real and that's not how you want to go. This pain will only be short and you don't want to let it get you down. "He's but a falling leaf".
This track is my personal favourite. It's impossible to not sing along. Whether you've had an argument like in the song or another issue in your life. Getting some sleep can always help to put things into perspective, "Shut your eyes, there are no lies in this world we call sleep". This is such a hopeful song, it reassures you that there is always an end. The ultimate pick me up.
If you don't get the chance to listen to the whole album, please just listen to Lullaby and hopefully that'll convince you to listen to the rest. It's such a beautiful song.
